Chip a piece off your find and pulverize it. Then pan out that and see what you get in the pan. :smokin:

Test #1:
Pyrite changes it's appearance when moved from direct light into shade; it also "glitters" in sunlight. Gold NEVER "glitters" and it's appearance does not change when moved from sunlight into shade.

Test #2:
Separate some of the "gold" colored material from the ore and hit it with a hammer, or if you can get a piece that's large enough, pressure it with the tip of a flat-bladed screwdriver. Pyrite is VERY brittle; it will shatter if struck or pressured hard. Gold on the other hand is very soft; it will flatten when hit with a hammer and will dent when pressered with the tip of a screwdriver.

It this turns out to be gold let me know where you're diggin!

Looks like pyrite in shale. Appears to be some pyrite replaced shell fragments in the right side of the larger piece.
